Device Overview

HTC Vive (Original)

Released: April 5, 2016

The original HTC Vive set the standard for room-scale VR with its SteamVR Lighthouse tracking system and dual OLED displays.

Key Specifications

  • Resolution: 1080 x 1200 per eye
  • Display: Dual OLED
  • Tracking: SteamVR Base Station 1.0
  • Controllers: Dual Vive Wands

Homeowner Prevention Guide

The original Vive is a classic, but its base stations have moving parts; never move them while they are powered on. To prevent controller trackpad failure, avoid pressing the pad with extreme force. Always untwist the 3-in-1 cable after every session to prevent internal copper fatigue and 'snow' in the display.

Common Issues

Base Station 'Red Light' Fix (Laser & Motor Repair)

Problem: One or both base stations show a blinking red light and stop tracking.

Cause: Internal laser diode failure or motor bearing seizure after years of use.

At-Home Remedy

Avoid moving base stations while they are powered on. If the red light appears, the internal laser or motor must be replaced.

Controller Trackpad & Vibration Fix (Haptic Actuator Repair)

Problem: The trackpad on the Vive Wand loses its 'click' or the vibration feels loose.

Cause: Internal rubber actuator shifting or haptic motor (LRA) failure.

At-Home Remedy

Don't press the trackpad with extreme force. If it feels mushy, it requires an internal shim and actuator replacement.
